New York State Police Academy Requirements

New York State Police Academy

Pt.1 - Pt. 2 - Pt.3 - Pt.4

Already our Steve Ference has brought you an unprecedented look at what it takes to become a state trooper. Last week, he took you inside the academy to see their workout and how to deal with scenarios troopers might face in the real world. On Thursday, he spent the day at the New York State Police Academy yet again. This time he learned the defensive tactics recruits need to know so they're ready for anything.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- State Police recruit Eric Van Bramer said, "I knew coming it would be challenging. You have a lot of instructors who are knowledgeable." Van Bramer hopes the training he's getting will help him excel as a New York State Trooper. "Being able to workout and get paid for it, it's great," he said. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

Here, working out is an understatement. I'm getting a taste of the training Van Bramer and the other recruits face each day. This time, it's Defensive Tactics, or DT. I'm taught the basics -- how to stand, where to put my hands, and how to punch. All of this so I could defend myself in some of the toughest situations troopers face. It's just about 10 minutes of practice, and it was quite a bit, I'm actually glad to be holding this bag now. But we haven't really even begun. Before we punch, we now have to do this aerobic exercise to simulate chasing a suspect. I just had to do 20 million "burpees" or whatever they call them.

I've got to be honest with you, I don't want to ever do another burpee again. Instead, it's time to box. They put me against the instructor, and he decided to pummel my face. New York State Police DT Instructor John Casey said, "That one in particular, I gave you a nice jab because you dropped your hands. I was giving you a little wakeup call to put them up." It's why Van Bramer says the training isn't just fun -- it's crucial. Van Bramer said, "The reason why you're here for 26 weeks is they provide you with the training, you're prepared with the man-power and resources to deal with that situation. I hope I never have to deal with that." But if he does, he'll be ready.
