ALBANY, N.Y. -- Previously, I told you how New York State Police recruits warm up. It includes pushups, situps, lunges, jogs, jumping jacks and a bunch of other exercises that just don't seem to stop. It's the typical way to begin the day for the State Police recruits who have been doing this for over 10 weeks as part of the 195th class.
I struggled to keep up, and learned there's a lot to keep in mind when you handcuff someone.
"Check him from head to toe make sure he doesn't have anything visible," said one instructor. He said having a person raise their hands to arrest them not only shows they don't have a weapon in their hands, it also tightens up their clothing so you can get a better look at any items that might be tucked under a shirt.
Soon, I had to put all these skills together in a mock situation. Like a real Trooper arriving on the scene, I had no idea what to expect.
"One D-4-2, in service," I had to say. The dispatcher told me over the crackle of my radio there was an altercation between two employees. Being a made-up situation, I headed down a hallway, not sure what to expect. Just being able to communicate with my dispatcher is tough - I'm still learning the protocols. "I'm Steve Ference with the New York State Police," I said to a man holding a white towel he held to his face. It was stained red. "What's going on here?" "You're gonna need five troopers," the man said, talking through the towel. "What do you need?" I asked. I offered to call for an ambulance, but he only kept repeating, "She broke my nose. You better call for back up." "Does she have any weapons?" I asked, trying to get a feel for what I might encounter inside. The instructor thought that was a good question. "No, she is a weapon," the victim said. Actually, she was the opposite. I had to figure out what to do when the suspect doesn't even want to talk with me. "I'm Steve Ference with the New York State Police. Are you Pat? Are you going to ignore me?" She was busy taking stock of supplies on a table in the center of the room and didn't look up.
"You just got a little tripped up when she wasn't paying attention to you," State Police Instructor, Trooper John Hooker told me after the role-playing came to an end. This wasn't one of the tougher scenarios. Troopers have to learn to be on their toes every second - a challenge worthy of the starting $50,000 salary that grows to $77,000 after five years. But don't expect me to make that kind of cash - I certainly didn't get an "A" trying to be a Trooper. "Overall, about a C," Trooper Hooker said he'd give me. Judging by the tone in his voice, I bet he was being generous. While I might not have what it takes, those who do can apply until December, before having to wait for the next exam in four years. My academy challenge continues next week.
